Purananuru # 065

King PerunJeralatan (the Chera king) adopted fasting protest
at the battle-field
when the forceful spear attack of the king KariKalan (the Chola king)
penetrated through his chest to back
feeling shameful to his pride.

There was melancholy in day’s life.
There was no band music; no yazh music; no gee in cooking pot being upside down; no wine has been consumed; on farmer’s music and festive in bazaar.
As one light appears while other light disappears behind the mount in a full-moon day, one king appears and another king disappears.
King PerunJeralatan (the Chera king) adopted fasting protest at the battle-field when the forceful spear attack of the king KariKalan (the Chola king) penetrated through his chest to back.
Wound on back, the king feels, is a shameful wound to him. Hence he decided to die by fasting in the war field sitting facing north (a customary behavior of Tamils).
The poet says that the day time in the country will not pass happy as the king is in dyeing mood.
