He, my lover didn’t think of my
sufferings in the midnight when I happen to hear the chattering sound of the male
and female birds-antril mating on the Palmyra tree under which the statue of
God rests. Entire village will be sleeping at that time.
He is the Man of the littoral land;
where shark cuts the net of the fishermen while they throw their javelins
aiming to kill it.
He did not think of me.
The lady
speaks these to her friend-maid.
The man hearing
in a distance will try to marry her, is the aim of the speech.
Poet: Sattanar,
Alamberi village, Arulaviya country, Madurai region
This is a poem of second century B.C.
