Purananuru, a study note

  • Purananuru is a literature of a kind of anthology of poems in Tamil belongs earlier to 2nd century A.D. It depicts the life style of the leading people of that time. There are 400 poems in this work including a prayer song of latter period.
  • Among the 400 two poems (no. 267 and 268) are not available at present. Furthermore some poems after the serial number 266 are available in broken without lines, phrases, etc.
  • There is no information about the compiler or the patron of the compiler. The compilation adopts a style, giving preference to poems on three Tamil monarchs, chieftains, leading persons and so on with some exemptions.
  • There are some grammatical notes at the end of each poem some of which are irrelevant according to scholars. Again each poem has a context note acceptable by all.
  • First 266 poems have an old commentary which point earlier commentary to that work which is not available at all.
